Malcolm Turnbull goes

I am disappointed that MT will exit politics but pleased that he is emphasising the issue of principle that is leading to his exit namely the grubby decision of Tony Abbott to reject an emissions trading scheme.  Even if one disagrees with MT’s politics one can scarcely deny his restless, powerful intellect – he gave a powerful public justification for an ETS to the Australian Parliament.  Isn’t it scandalous that while MT leaves clowns like Barnaby Joyce continue? What a party the inept Tony Abbott is creating – a mob of populist clowns who reject market-driven means for addressing climate issues in favor of Soviet-style direct interventions.

Yes he’s a loss to Australian politics, notwithstanding his dreadful judgement in the Grech affair. He’s an even bigger loss to the Liberals, of course – there’s a real risk they’ll march off into the far-right wilderness after they lose the next election.

I wouldn’t worry too much if I was you about Abbott’s promises to reintroduce a command-driven economy in repsonse to AGW. That’s the purest of pure politics and would be quickly ditched (unfortunately probably in favour of no action on climate at all) if Abbott ever did get into government.

I agree with DD, it’s really bad for Aus politics — indeed, it’s starting to look a lot like State politics, where the choice is between awful and worse.

It’s been a long time since people with a deep intellect were welcome in the Liberal Party. The Fraser government had a fair few, men like Peter Baume, John Carrick and Fred Chaney, but it’s been slim pickings ever since (John Hewson being a semi-exception.)

Turnbull is better off out of it. As he said, he’s nearly 56 and he might have made a different decision if he was 10 years younger. But the prospect of spending the rest of career in opposition, even if he reclaimed the leadership at some point, cannot have been attractive.

Unlike most of his political peers, he has many options. If we ever get an independent reserve bank equivalent for carbon trading he would make an excellent chairman of it.
