It is difficult even for a Chinese-Australian who understands a bit of Cantonese (which has even more tones). http://cantonese.ca/tones.php Getting the tones will go a long way... as will recognising the characters (and being about to pronounce) your favourite dishes (a very pleasurable way of learning any language). The locals will really appreciate the effort - and will give you brownie points because you are obviously 'lao wai' (btw - it's handy to know this word so you know when people are talking about you!) ;) Good on you Harry for making the effort – it’s a challenging but wonderful language.
